Duties
This is a full-time, non-exempt position working under the general direction and supervision of the Public Works Director. This position performs a variety of technical duties related to developing, implementing, and conducting civil engineering inspections and programs for public works projects and service systems.
Essential Functions
- Attends pre-construction meetings to coordinate involvement of local contractors, special districts, the city departments and local utilities
- Conducts routine and complex inspections of public works projects to verify consistency between specifications and actual construction
- Monitors work performed and materials used by private contractors/utility companies to ensure compliance
- Reads and interprets construction plans and determines plan conformity to established standards; compiles statistical information; verifies computations, structure lay-outs, grades, etc.
- Communicates both verbally and in writing with contractors, local utilities/district, and city personnel and exercises professional problem solving skills and cooperation.
- Must work on-call in rotation with other department employees.
- Required to plow snow and be available to respond to a call out for snow removal, including weekends and holidays.
- Required to respond to emergency situations and help determine correct course of action.
- Responsible to perform special projects or other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, government agencies, subordinates, and the public, and demonstrate diplomacy and cooperative problem solving.
- Ability to communicate ideas, recommendations, and instructions clearly both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and design, and a variety of technical engineering equipment
- Knowledge of GIS mapping; civil engineering principles, practices and procedures; drafting and blueprint reading
- Ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations, read and interpret plans and specifications
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED AND four (4) years’ experience in construction, inspection, compliance testing, survey, or similar related to above duties OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B or be able to obtain within six months of hire
- Must have or be able to obtain the following certifications within one year of hire:
- Utah Registered Storm Water Inspector (RSI), Utah Water Operator II, and Utah Wastewater Operator II
- Reliability, good attendance, positive work attitude, enthusiastic, confident, outgoing, helpful and committed.
