Eagle Mountain City maintains critical wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure supporting one of Utah's growing communities. Operators help ensure wastewater is safely and efficiently transported to treatment facilities while maintaining collection system reliability and responding to emergency situations.
The Wastewater Collection System Operator I or II performs construction, inspection, maintenance, cleaning, and repair work throughout Eagle Mountain City's wastewater collection infrastructure. The position also cross-trains with wastewater treatment facility personnel and assists with treatment operations when needed.
Placement at Operator I or Operator II is based on experience and certification level.
- Operate and maintain the City's wastewater collection system, including lift stations, manholes, pumps, motors, and backup generators
- Perform preventative maintenance including greasing equipment, changing oil, adjusting belts and pulleys, replacing pumps and motors, and clearing clogged pumps
- Inspect wastewater collection systems and correct structural deficiencies, infiltration, and sewer main stoppages
- Operate jet trucks, power rodders, root cutters, jackhammers, metal detectors, and utility locating equipment
- Repair and rebuild manholes and wastewater mains
- Locate concealed manholes and raise infrastructure to grade
- Document and map wastewater collection infrastructure, including pipe sizes, flow direction, congestion, and maintenance needs
- Prepare inspection and cleaning reports
- Perform confined-space entry for wastewater system maintenance and cleaning
- Operate gas detectors, davit arm hoists, tripods, self-retracting lifelines, harnesses, and other confined-space safety equipment
- Operate high-velocity jet trucks and vacuum trucks
- Use CCTV inspection equipment to inspect sewer mains and lift station pumping systems
- Perform dye testing and troubleshoot wastewater line problems
- Respond to sewer breaks, backups, equipment failures, and other emergencies
- Cross-train with wastewater treatment facility personnel and assist with plant operations as required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Knowledge of trench work, pipe fitting, pumping systems, wastewater collections, and utility maintenance
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment
- Knowledge of wastewater system hazards, traffic control, respirator use, and OSHA safety standards
- Ability to troubleshoot wastewater systems and respond effectively during emergency situations
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor and lift up to 100 pounds
- Operator I: Entry-level position. No previous wastewater experience is required. Must obtain Wastewater Collection Systems Operator I certification within 12 months of hire.
- Operator II: Requires two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience and current Wastewater Collection Systems Operator II certification.
- Class A Commercial Driver License
- Wastewater Collection Systems Operator certification appropriate to assigned level
- Flagger certification
- Confined-space certification
- Forklift certification
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and wastewater-specific software
- Outdoor work in changing and seasonal weather conditions
- Strenuous physical activity including walking, standing, stooping, reaching, and lifting
- Potential exposure to wastewater, industrial waste, biological hazards, electrical hazards, and moving machinery
- Regular work within public rights-of-way and around traffic
- Confined-space operations
- Twenty-four-hour rotating standby and on-call assignments
- Weekend and holiday work as scheduled
Pay ranges from $22.00 to $26.00 per hour depending on operator level and qualifications. This is a full-time position with Eagle Mountain City. Additional benefit information is available through the City's employment portal.
