Public Works Director

Perry City is seeking a Public Works Director to operate and maintain the City’s water, sewer, and streets systems, maintain compliance with State of Utah rules and regulations, and supervise employees working in the Perry City Public Works and Maintenance Department.

Reporting to the City Administrator, the Public Works Director manages the City’s streets and utility operations and directly supervises all Public Works employees, including parks seasonal staff. The position oversees drinking water, sewer, storm drains, streets, facilities, GIS mapping, equipment, budgets, regulatory compliance, and related maintenance activities.

• Supervise all Public Works and Maintenance employees
• Manage department operations and ensure projects are completed and City water and roads are operating properly
• Maintain City drinking water, including adequate storage levels, proper chlorine residuals, and water facilities
• Read water meters
• Ensure sewer lines and lift stations are operating properly and direct routine sewer line cleaning
• Perform water and sewage sampling required by the State
• Manage storm drain compliance as required by State law, including MS4 permitting
• Outline bid requirements for City streets
• Supervise road repair, maintenance, and snow removal
• Oversee maintenance of City facilities
• Purchase equipment in compliance with City purchasing policies
• Assist with creation and management of budgets for streets, water, sewer, storm drain, and garbage
• Compile and update City GIS mapping
• Assist with on-call response and respond to after-hours emergencies

• Associate degree or equivalent technical training in a related field
• Communication skills necessary to coordinate City maintenance activities
• Basic algebra and geometry skills for calculating reservoir and pipe capacities, flow rates, horsepower, and related measurements
• Management experience and skills necessary to supervise Public Works employees
• Problem-solving skills and the ability to work with situations where limited standardization exists
• Computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Office applications
• Knowledge and experience working with GIS mapping and reports
• Ability to read and write State and Federal reports related to sewer, water, and storm drains
• Ability to inspect water and sewer lines for compliance with City and State codes
• Ability to inspect Public Works standards, including right-of-way requirements
• Ability to operate equipment and tools used for City and building maintenance

• Utah State Level 3 Culinary Water certification and Level 2 Sewer Collection certification, or ability to obtain the certifications within 6 months of hire
• CDL driver’s license preferred
• MS4 Storm Drain certification preferred

The Public Works Director communicates with citizens, co-workers, subordinates, technicians, contractors, engineers, City Council members, and others to manage City maintenance. The position requires the ability to read and write reports and business correspondence and directly supervises all Public Works employees, including parks seasonal staff.

• Requires the vision abilities necessary to drive equipment, read meters, monitor chlorine flow rates, and perform other daily duties
• Regular and predictable attendance and proper notification in the event of an absence are required

This position is the head of a municipal department and is appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the City Council. The position is therefore exempt from the protections described in Utah State Code 10-3-1105(1)(a).

The salary range for the Public Works Director is $87,942–$156,374. Perry City provides a full benefits package.
