A wastewater treatment lagoon operator is responsible for maintaining and monitoring the lagoon and its associated equipment to ensure wastewater is treated effectively and safely. This includes inspecting and maintaining equipment, monitoring treatment processes, collecting and testing samples, adding chemicals, and troubleshooting any issues. They also ensure compliance with environmental regulations and keep detailed records.
Monitoring and Adjusting Treatment Processes:
- Operators continuously monitor the lagoon's treatment processes, ensuring they meet the required quality standards. This involves adjusting equipment, adding chemicals, and responding to changes in wastewater flow or characteristics.
Equipment Maintenance and Inspection:
- Regular inspections of pumps, aerators, valves, the collection pipelines, and other equipment are crucial to identify and address potential problems before they escalate. Maintenance tasks include lubrication, cleaning, fueling, testing of the backup generator and minor repairs.
Sample Collection and Analysis:
- Operators collect wastewater samples at various stages of treatment and perform tests to assess water quality. These tests help determine the effectiveness of the treatment process and identify any potential issues. The results of these tests are reported to the state
Chemical Addition:
- Operator will add chlorine to disinfect the water or aid in the removal of pollutants.
Troubleshooting and Problem Solving:
- Operators need to be able to identify and resolve issues that may arise during the treatment process, such as equipment malfunctions, unusual water quality, changes in flow rates or system upsets.
Record Keeping:
- Detailed records of operational data, sample results, maintenance activities, and any incidents are essential for regulatory compliance and operational efficiency. Pipe line and manhole inspections must be recorded.
Ensuring Safety:
- Wastewater treatment lagoons can present various hazards, so operators must adhere to strict safety procedures and protocols to protect themselves and others.
Physical Requirements
- The Operator must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job. This includes, but is not limited to, heavy lifting, such as removing manhole covers that weigh over 100 pounds.
Compliance with Regulations:
- Operators are responsible for ensuring the lagoon's operations comply with all relevant local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
Contract Position:
- This position will be a contract position. The applicant will be required to set up or have a business license with the State of Utah. Obtain a Workers Compensation insurance policy or waiver. A wastewater lagoon operator certificate will be required within 1 year of hire. Training opportunities and grants are available to help with this.
High School Diploma or GED, Experience in Waste water treatment preferred but not required. Training and certification available. Ability to work unsupervised. General maintenance, mechanical and electrical skills preferred. Ability to lift 60 lbs, Ability to recognize and report safety hazards. Ability to work well with supervisors, board members and the public. Able to read, write, complete reports both online and written. Use a computer to track lagoon operation data.
