Provo City is seeking a motivated individual who enjoys working independently to perform as a part-time Cross Connection Control Technical Worker. The Cross Connection Control Program is responsible for protecting the city’s drinking water supply by preventing contamination from backflow events. The program ensures that proper backflow prevention assemblies are installed and maintained across businesses and residences to keep Provo's water system safe. What is the compensation?

Pay Rate: $20.00 to $22.00 per hour, depending on qualifications.

What will I do?

Visit businesses to schedule and conduct backflow hazard assessments, determining required backflow prevention measures.

Deliver non-compliance notices to customers not meeting backflow prevention requirements.

Take photos of unprotected cross connections and document findings.

Update backflow preventer data and upload photos to the online backflow tracking system.

Set up appointments and manage your schedule efficiently, ensuring time is used effectively.

Communicate with the public, occasionally handling confrontational situations with professionalism and calmness.

Complete Continuing Education classes and certifications to stay up to date on the latest practices in the field.

What do I need to apply?

Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to enter data, upload photos, and manage digital records.

Ability to take accurate notes and field photos.

Basic plumbing knowledge or familiarity with mechanical/building systems preferred.

Cross Connection Control Program Administrator certification required within 6 months of hire.

Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester certification must be earned within 1 year of hire.

What training is provided?

This position offers an excellent entry point for individuals interested in gaining field experience in public works or water systems. While experience in water systems, cross connection control, or backflow prevention fields is helpful, it is not required. Provo City will provide comprehensive training, including support in obtaining necessary certifications. If you are dependable, organized, and effective interacting with the public, we will provide the tools and guidance needed for you to succeed in this role.

What are the physical and environmental factors?

This position involves working both inside and out of doors in a variety of weather conditions. This role will include interacting with members of the public in potentially confrontational, uncomfortable, or stressful situations. This position requires physical strength and agility sufficient for climbing, balancing, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping. May include moderate lifting and carrying of up to 50lbs.

What are the hours?

20-25 hours per week between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday - Thursday, . Actual schedule to be discussed by manager and employee.

What is the selection process?

This position is open until filled and will be closed when sufficient, qualified applications to proceed with a competitive selection process have been received (at least seven days). Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted.

If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
