Class Summary

Performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks and responsibilities within. areas such as streets/storm, water/sewer, or parks. Work requires use of hand tools, power tools, and light and heavy-duty equipment and vehicles. Work is performed under direction of the City Manager or designated supervisor and may also be completed independently. Employees assist with routine and complex installation, maintenance, and repair duties and respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

Essential Functions
  • Performs construction, installation, maintenance, and repair duties for streets, storm systems, water/sewer systems, or parks in accordance with safety practices.
  • Conducts roadway maintenance including debris removal, grading, asphalt and concrete repair, sidewalk and curb construction, painting, storm line inspection, and equipment operation.
  • Performs water and sewer system maintenance including flow testing, chlorine checks, valve and hydrant maintenance, pump station monitoring, reservoir maintenance, meter installation and repair, sewer cleaning, and recordkeeping.
  • Performs parks and grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, irrigation repair, ball field preparation, pesticide application, facility maintenance, trash removal, pressure washing, and pest control.
  • Provides traffic control at construction sites to ensure safety.
  • Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on City vehicles, equipment, and tools.
  • Plows, sands, and removes ice and snow from streets and sidewalks.
  • Responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
  • Communicates with the public and refers complaints to supervisors.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Environment

Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to varying weather, traffic hazards, noise, fumes, and equipment. Physical demands include standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 100 pounds, and working in confined or elevated spaces. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent with experience in public works maintenance or an

equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of:

  • Motorized hand tools and equipment
  • Basic construction techniques
  • Occupational hazards and safety practices
  • Heavy equipment operation
  • Safe pesticide use

Ability to:

  • Perform semi-skilled maintenance work
  • Learn applicable laws and standards including Utah Division of Drinking Water, OSHA, and UDOT
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Operate tools and equipment safely
  • Troubleshoot maintenance issues• Read maps and construction documents
  • Perform basic math calculations
  • Respond to emergencies
License or Certification Requirements
  • Valid Utah driver’s license with good driving record
  • Ability to complete confined space entry training
  • Ability to obtain Grade II Water Certification within one year
  • Ability to obtain pesticide applicator certification if required
  • Ability to obtain CDL with endorsements if required
  • Ability to obtain Utah Wastewater Operator Certification Collection Grade I within one year
  • Ability to obtain Utah Sewer Operator Certification Grade I
