Chlorine Supply Chain Issues

Westlake, a chlorine manufacturing company in Washington State has had electrical issues that have caused them to cease production. It is expected that it will be approximately 30 days before this plant comes back on line. There have been reports of some water systems in the Pacific Northwest experiencing shortages of chlorine. There have been no reports of any Utah water or wastewater systems experiencing a shortage. There is no expectation that there will be a shortage of chlorine to Utah water and wastewater systems. Here are some specifics regarding this issue:

• Thatcher Chemical has said that their existing water and wastewater customers will remain their priority for deliveries.
• Do not order any additional chlorine above what you normally would. This will only add to the problem.
• Do not change chlorine dosage rates unless you can do so without affecting drinking water quality or wastewater effluent quality.
• EPA is putting on a webinar regarding supply chain issues on Wednesday June 30, 2021 at 1:30 MDT (3:30 EST).
• The Rural Water Association of Utah and UTWARN will give you more information as it becomes available.
