Wastewater Operator

The Wastewater Operator reports to the Wastewater Division Manager and performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work on the sanitary sewer and collection systems.

1. Maintain sewage system

1.1 Install, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair sewage system, pumps, motors, grinders, generators, and other equipment.

1.2 Schedule maintenance for equipment and complete the scheduled maintenance.

1.3 Maintain, inspect, and clean all pump station buildings and grounds.

1.4 Operate and maintain gasoline and diesel engines, and backup power generator system.

1.5 Keep accurate records, i.e. charts and daily logs, of all maintenance and repairs.

1.6 Respond to lift station alarms and collection system emergencies after regular hours (on call)

1.7 Daily inspection pump stations for irregular flows, noises, smells, vibrations, and any operation malfunctions that could lead to an unexpected failure.

1. Maintain Sewer Collection Systems

2.1 Repair and/or replace cracked and/or broken sewer lines.

2.2 Locate area and uncover the damaged line.

2.3 Evaluate the problem and identify a solution.

2.4 Obtain appropriate repair supplies.

2.5 Cut out the damaged section of line and install new line.

2.6 Replace road-base and prepare for asphalt finishing.

2.7 Clean and or inspect system pipes on a regular maintenance schedule.

2.8 Clean, repair and or inspect sewer lines in emergency situations.

1. Monitoring and Sampling

4.1 Install flow metering equipment in designated manholes for capacity monitoring.

4.2 Program meters for accurate collection.

4.3 Collects data and verify data.

4.4 Programs and installs automatic sampling equipment from specified locations in collection system for billing.

4.5 Oversees proper handling and analysis of samples.

4.6 Documents data and sends reports to Utility Billing and to Wastewater Division Manager and/or reporting authority.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent plus some specialized training in a closely related field, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience.
• Must possess a current Wastewater Works Operation or Collection System Certification Grade II or can obtain within one year.
• Must possess current FEMA/National Incident Management System certifications (NIMS) or can obtain within one year.
• Must obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), (including Tanker endorsement) within one year of date of hire.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. Knowledge of various types of pipes, valves, fittings, mapping and piping layouts and some knowledge of hydraulics.
2. Skilled in the operation of backhoe, 10-wheeler, pumps, compactor, and combination cleaning truck.
3. Ability to operate and maintain equipment used in wastewater maintenance and repair; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
4. Working knowledge of office machine usage computers and tablets.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands and arms to operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The employee is also occasionally required to work in confined spaces such as manholes, vaults, tanks, etc. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud in field settings, and moderately quiet in office settings.
